Save Myomimus roachi
The world's rare rodent species, The Ground Dormouse ( Mouse Tailed dormouse, Myomimus roachi ) is living in the Trace part of Turkey where the only recent habitats in the world. Once the Ground Dormouse was living in the bushes of oak forests of Europe and Asia. Because of intensive farming and forestry activities he lost nearly all the natural habitats until today. The last records of the Ground Dormouse were taken from the bushes and oak woodlands near cultivated lands of Edirne region. He will be extinct if urgent precautions are not taken. The Ground Dormouse has a difficult life cycle; has a very long hibernation, breeds only once a year, can not overcome the hibernation because of inanition , predation... Over these he encounters the loss of habitat problem. To sustain the Ground Dormouse life urgent precautions should be taken. To prevent the Ground Dormouse extinction, the last habitats must be purchased and must be granted protection where the species population is in good condition. Habitat improvements must be developed to increase the population in these lands. The photos and documentary films will be produced in the natural habitats of the species to be used in the presentations. To reduce the factors that threatens the life-cycle of the species and to ensure the sustainablity of his life in the last habitats of the Ground Dormouse, proper precautions must be taken in collaboration with local people. For this purpose conservation activities and necessary information will be given to the farmers.
In addition to these activities the seminars about the species conservation precautions and sustainable generation will be given to the students of elementary education to raise awareness. By the species habitat conservation activities, protection of these areas will be provided for many years in collaboration with local people. The continuation of this project , to sustain the life of the Ground Dormouse populations we aim to maintain, providing genetic alteration, continue the habitat restoration, breeding and implantation to the previous habitats.
