Community NTFP enterprises for sustainable forest development & peace in a violent Chhattisgarh
Community NTFP enterprises for sustainable forest development & peace in a violent Chhattisgarh
? The project is planned on the backdrop of unfair trade and devolution of management power exploiting the forest dweller community and natural resources, causing environmental and social un-sustainability.
? The development of Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP) such as Tendu, Mahua, Gums and Resins, Dyes, Lac, Tassar Silk, Medicinal Plants or Plate making leaf, etc., is a key to the well being of the ?bottom of the pyramid? population that resides in the remote, hilly and forested tracks, as it contributes about 25% or more of the income in many tribal families especially in the lean season which is crucial for their survival.
? It requires less water and faces lower risk or damage by wildlife or drought or flood or climatic change.
? Being affected, it causes unleash poverty alleviation for millions and about 80 million forest margin people steeped in poverty, whose survival is at stake today due to the aforesaid prohibitions or constraints, besides causing forest degradation.
? As NTFP gatherers are paid poorly, they have little motivation to protect the NTFP or forest, leading to its unsustainable use or diversion.
