Ornamental fishery to provide tribal women alternative employment and Distribution of Smokeless Chullahs
Ornamental fishery to provide tribal women alternative employment and Distribution of Smokeless Chullahs
? 1,253 of the indigenous tribal families such as Koli Mahadeo, Thakars and primitive tribes such as Katkaris, living in the valleys of the Ghod and Bubra rivers have been displaced by the construction of the Dimbhe dam, which submerged eleven villages and destroyed the croplands in another thirteen villages. The project is located in 1,200 hectares of a significant fragile ecosystem of Western Ghats.
? Shashwat helps these local communities to develop small scale fishing activities in the dam reservoir and improve agricultural production. The reservoir has been stocked with fish and the local population is supported to obtain fishing leases, boats and nets, but the community also enforces a number of restrictions in order to ensure fish stocks are replenished.
? The project thus aims at helping the tribal women to start a business in ornamental fishery and to increase their own household incomes besides utilizing the natural resource base of their area to the fullest extent.
