Community action to reduce pressure on forests through sustainable land use & Local Biodiversity Management around the Protected areas in tribal belts of Seoni District

? People in the project area currently have limited livelihood opportunities and are therefore extracting fuel wood from forest for sale which is creating an extra pressure on the local forest, and due to this they are getting directly impacted, as they need to go deeper in the forest.
? Currently the uses of fuel wood practices, on provider and user side, are insufficient and they are unaware about improved practices.
? The communities are dependent on the local natural resources which are limited and degrading and require attention for its improvement.
? The project is located in Seoni District of Madhya Pradesh in which a total 7 villages will be the part of the project and of these 7 project villages, total 304 families are engaged in the business of fuel wood selling, with 27 households from Kamkasur, 55 households from Meharbori, 25 households from Nanhikar, 25 households from Mundiakheda, 80 households from Aamagad, 62 households from Aamgoav and 30 households from Barvah village.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

1 exposure visit & training to tailoring centre of urban area will be done. 3 exposure visits to related madagasker technique and bio fertilizer based crop cultivation method will be conducted. 1 exposure visit will be organized for member of JFM (van samiti) of village Nanhikanhar, Kamkasur, Mehrabodi Mundiakheda, Barvah, Aamgoav, Aamagad in responsibility of committee and increase the liabilities with conservation of forest, protection and cultivation. 30 awareness campaigns will be done on alternative new energy resources like Sarai Cooker, Urja Cackes, LPG, Biogas, Smoke less cook stoves, etc in rural as well as urban areas.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Gramsabha will be organized at the beginning to provide all the information related to the project. Various meetings will be conducted to share the progress of the project. 6 workshops (2 workshops yearly) will be conducted during the project related to keep the community at village level informed about the activities related to the projects. JFM committees annual meetings, NREGA planning exercise, district planning meeting will be organized to disseminate learning?s in the district.

Gender Focus

The community will have a direct involvement in the project planning and designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluation to ensure effective and efficient working of the project (13 villages will be surveyed in order to know their aspirations, beneficiaries will be identified, the project will be monitored on monthly basis).10 women SHGs will be formed and trained. 07 energy cake units will provide direct employment to 28 families and benefit other 50-60 families as they will be responsible for supplying raw materials to the unit.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at reducing pressure on forests through sustainable land use and local biodiversity management around the protected areas in tribal belts of Seoni District. The project was evolved after realizing the drudgery of women in fuel wood supply business which has been reduced in about 300 Ha of forest. 468 kitchen gardens will be set up to ensure food security to the families and provide them additional income by selling the vegetables to hotels and in town. The project will improve forest coverage by 20Ha by plantation of forestry species on Panchayat land thus reducing land degradation on 350 Ha of land. 1728 tons fuel wood will be saved reducing atmospheric carbon and ease climate change conditions. 2 nurseries will be set up for the conservation of medicinal and endangered plant species. 7 units of Urja cake units will set up to produce the cakes and supply it to the village people or dhabas.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project deals with community comprising of Gond and other tribes. The NGO and the community are working together to provide livelihood to 304 tribal families.

Policy Impact

The project is linked and can be taken as a demonstration project for major Government programs like National Rural Employment Guarantee act, National Program on Climate Change Adaptation, Watershed development program etc. The project can also provide lead to MP government?s World Bank supported DPIP. 30,000 trees will be planted in link with MNREGA and Forest Dept. (Bamboo, local varieties). Planning for NREGA support in villages and liaison with government for land improvement, water resource development in 7 villages. The project can be a role model for seoni district and act as demonstration cum capacity sharing for various government and other agencies.

Notable Community Participation

Youth will be trained (9 trainings, 3 for each year) regarding self employment activities and developing capacity building at village level.

Project Results

* Constructed 464 smokeless stoves as families are small in this region each stove will save ~4 kg wood per day hence saving 464 x 4 x 365 x 6= 4062 Mt of wood and reducing emissions by 8048 Mt CO2 equivalent in their life span of 6 years.
* 12 biogas constructed which reduced 5.6 x 12 x 10 = 672 MT of CO2 emission.
* Plantedf >10,000 trees belonging to locally endangered species has been done this has 10 different species and covers ~14 Ha area near villages.
* Additional 161 smokeless stoves have been distributed in villages adjoining Pench tiger reserve with help from Pench Tiger Reserve reducing 796 MT of CO2 emission.
* 311 families have been linked to alternate livelihood sources as most of these families were earlier involved in selling wood in nearby city of Seoni.
* Approximately 2000 Ha area from where wood was being extracted has now come under sustained extraction as the demand for wood has considerably reduced.
* Partnerships established with MP state Biodiversity board, MP Agro, Forest department, Bioved.
