Conservation of Natural Resources and Strengthening of livelihood security for three tribal communities of Parsmania Pathar

? The three tribal communities involved in the project (Koel, Gond, and Bhumia) are dependent for their livelihood on selling fuel wood from the nearby forest to the town market. These communities prefer to stay in the forest but the livelihood opportunities are shrinking for them.
? The project focuses on conservation of indigenous seeds varieties and promotion and conservation of medicinal plant species in Parsmania Pathar.
? It is proposed for bringing more than 250 acres of land under organic food grain production involving about 350 farmers in 10 villages thereby producing more than 1350 quintals of food grain.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

4 trainings will be planned for 100 farmers in seed production through SRI Technique. Awareness among the consumers will be created related to traditional varieties, nutrition value analysis. Training will be organized for key staff members at premier institutes like ICRIISAT in latest framework of IWRM and crop specific up-dating of knowledge and sharing practices from the local area and such institutes. Exposure visits will be conducted for the group of farmers including women farmers those who will run the seed bank to Deccan Development Society, Hyderabad to learn about the seed bank, its storage and its management. Training's will be done on non chemical pest nurseries.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Booklet/ Handbook on indigenous seeds varieties in Madhya Pradesh and medicinal plants species in Parsmania Pathar will be developed and distributed. Audio visual on SRI technique, conservation of traditional varieties and medicinal plants species will be made.

Gender Focus

Both men and women will be equally responsible for conducting the project activities. 35 SHGs will be formed (23 women SHGs and 12 women SHGs) to take up cultivation of medicinal plants through nursery techniques in 30 villages. 75 farmers will be motivated for medicinal plant plantations. Women will be involved in collection, processing, sale of forest products. Developing farmers Producers Company dealing with indigenous seed and organic food grain. Endangered species of trees like Meda, Dahiman, Mahul, Sadan, Kullu, Bija, Kasahi etc along with 150 other wild plants and medicinal plants will be conserved through raising nurseries. Banks accounts opened and credit will be provided to the farmers.

Policy Impact

Links with the State Agriculture Departmeent, NREGA, KVK Majgawan, BMC Pithorabad, M.P. State Biodiversity Board, Din Dayal Sodh Sandhya will be created. Medh Bandi and stop/check dams in collaboration with NREGA will be developed. Convergence will be done with MGNREGA for creating water structures through community partnerships to develop local ownerships. Seed production and eventually marketing of 30 varieties will be taken up by the shareholders.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at conservation of natural resources and strengthening the livelihood of three tribal communities of Parsmania Pathar. One model nursery with more than 100 medicinal plants will be developed. About 1000 acres of farmland will be brought under cultivation of 30 indigenous varieties for food grain production by 100 farmers. Market linkage will be established with Delhi Hatt, Bhopal Haat, Satna Mandi to motivate the farmers to sell their products and earn income for themselves. Stalls will be set up at Gond Mahasabha for awareness, market and sale of indigenous seed varieties and medicinal plants. Self sustaining seed banks will be developed with backward linkage of seed production and forward linkage through marketing indigenous seed varieties. Grain production unit will be set up.

The project deals with improving the livelihood opportunity of tribal communities i.e. Koel, Gond, Bhumia.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Workshops will be conducted for women to develop them as resource person in the domain of sustainable agriculture. Monthly meetings will be organized at block level for sharing their experiences related to hurdles faced in the fields etc. 3 Seed festival will be organized to provide platform to the farmers for exchange and sale of seed material. 2 Grain Mahotsav will be organized to develop an organic grain market at block level (100 farmers will get opportunity to sale their organic produced 20 types of grains). 2 farmer field schools will be established. 1 indigenous seeds varieties exhibition centre will be developed. Farmer clubs will be formed in 30 villages to take up organic seed production and organic grain production through SRI

Project Results

* Conservation of Traditional Seed Varieties: The NGO has collected 134 varieties of traditional seeds grown by 1500 farmers in Parsmania Pathar. Initiated SRI technique, scientific approach is being used to grow 100 varieties of traditional crops in 2 acre of land.
* Seed Banks have been established for storing and conserving traditional variety of seeds.
* Use of alternate source of energy: 200 households started using smokeless cook stoves as using fuel wood is much more convenient than buying coal. At ~7 kg per day, each stove will save around 2.5 MT of fuel wood from burning each year and reduce around 4.75 Mt of CO2 emission reduction. 200 cook stoves will save 2500 mt of fuel wood and reduce 4750 mt of CO2 emission.
* About 250 endangered species of medicinal plants have been conserved in the 3 nurseries developed.
* Through the NGO more than INR 1.25 lakh worth rice sold.
