Respectable livelihood to the De-Notified and Dalit families through Conservation of Biodiversity and restoring degraded and waste land
Respectable livelihood to the De-Notified and Dalit families through Conservation of Biodiversity and restoring degraded and waste land
? Due to intense pressure of local population on the bio-mass and land through deforestation and cultivation of marginal lands, the project area is heavily degraded.
? The climate of Karmala Block of Solapur District, Maharashtra, is characterized by hot summer and the block receives moderate rainfall ranging between 500 to 662 mm per year. Rain fed farming in this area is complex, diverse and risk prone and is characterized by low levels of productivity and low input usage.
? Historically the De-notified tribes such as Phasepardhi, Bhill, etc. are known as traditional hunting tribes in India. 40% of the tribes in the area are dependent on hunting for their livelihood which is banned under wildlife protection Act 1972 and thus leaves a little scope for earning the livelihood by the tribals. They have been provided with certain facilities such as housing, identity proof, education, hand pumps but still they are facing a lot of problems from the community and they have to deal with social conflict.
? The NGO addresses all these concerns and develop a system which is not only productive and of low cost but also resource conserving and sustainable. The Mahatma Phule Samaj Seva Mandal (MPSSM) decided to create opportunities of gainful self-employment for rural families, especially De- notifies and dalit families, ensuring sustainable livelihood, enriched environment, and improved quality of life through this project.
