Ensuring Sustainable Livelihoods for locals from risks and affects of Climate Change Variability on agricultural production
? Rajasthan is the largest State in India with a population of about 56 million and holding about 14% India?s cultivable land, of which only 1% is irrigated and categorizing it the most water deficit state.
? The socio-economic condition of the State is very poor due to various natural vagaries like recurrent droughts, low productivity of land, traditional practices and area specific resource poverty.
? The adaptability of climate change is very poor in the state and it saw 27 droughts in 50 years, and as a result the land productivity has gone down, soil salinity and erosion increased, vegetable cover reduced and common property resources turned unproductive leading to crisis for marginalized and indigenous community.
? The crop failure followed by shortfall in agricultural production and decline in wage opportunities has induced greater livelihood insecurity among the poor section of the society. This forces a significant part of rural population to migrate and derive an additional income from secondary sources such as wage labour skilled workers like drivers and operations, etc.
? The project will be set up in 8 villages of Dudu Block of Jaipur District and these villages fall under five Panchayats in a radius of 60 kms.
? The targeted villages are located in the downstream of Sambhar Salt Lake therefore the ground water in most of the cases is saline, it is contaminated due to the presence of fluoride, nitrate and TDS.
? 62% drinking water requirement is met through the state owned Bisalpur Dudu Water supply project, 20% of the hand pumps, whereas 12% depends on private dug wells and 6% fetch drinking water from their personal tube wells.
? The project that intend to improve the agriculture practices, capacity building of the community to cope with the climatic changes and inculcating the best practices which are suitable and sustainable for local ecology and livestock management.
