Promotion and Conservation of Agro-Biodiversity Impacting Community Livelihoods and Sustainable Development in Rural Areas of Dausa District in Rajasthan
Gramin Vigyan Seva Sansthan (GVSS) is an NGO registered under society Registration Act 1860 on 13 Sep 1988 . GVSS has approximately eighteen years of experience and has implemented projects such as ?Conservation and Management of Natural Resources? to promote sustainable agriculture and improved livelihoods with emphases on biodiversity aspects. It has provided irrigation facilities to poor farmers and promoted the techniques of using organic manure, compositing, plantation and providing seedlings to the farmers for promoting agro- forestry. These activities improved economic condition of the poor and marginal farmers as well as rural women. GVSS is the member of existing NGOs network namely Vishwas Manch, Rajasthan Prakrtik Sanadhan Prabandh Manch, Rajasthan Jal Biradari. GVSS has also undertaken agricultural and livestock development activities and imparted training to the farmers in using biomass and new improved techniques of agriculture and cattle rearing which are scientific in nature.

Project Goal: - The aim of the project is to conserve and enhance biodiversity, through use and promotion of biomass with better agro practice which results in less use of chemicals, healthy soil and improves the quality of living of the poor and marginalized farmers. It also aims to provide Agro-Biodiversity solutions and enhance the livelihood of the farmers by adopting a community based approach.
Project Objectives:-
? Promote and enhance capacity of the farmers enrich farming systems through maintaining diversity in agriculture.
? Strengthen the institutions of rural women for conserving environment and biodiversity and improve their livelihood sources.
? Conserve crop seeds of local varieties in order to promote and Conserve Agro-Biodiversity for livelihoods generation and sustainable development.
? Document indigenous knowledge of the people and use it for improving agriculture practices.
? Conserve bio-diversity through energy conservation: Conserving forests and reduce the fuel wood pressure by promoting agro forestry.
? Capacitance the farmers for the improved scientific application with indigenous and organic agriculture knowledge by using biomass and environment friendly techniques.
? Promote and document indigenous knowledge, traditional agricultural practices and conserve agro-biodiversity in terms of the moisture conservation measures and use of biomass ? Nadep compost, green manure and repellent plants.

? Formation of ten village level organizations/samithis namely ?Krishi Mitra Mandals? (KMM) and at least 20 SHGs and building their capacities.
? The community Leaders? orientation and managerial training. Training will also cover different issues related to agricultural practices.
? Rapport building, reviving/strengthening community institutions for sustainable management of other common property community resources.
? Promotion of Agro-forestry for fuel and fodder followed by various activities for trial and demonstrations.
? Fodder development in barren land
? Demonstration and promotion of moisture conservation masers.
? Optimum use of Biomass resources and improvement of soil fertility.
? Promotion of sustainable agro-practices.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
1 Orientation sessions and 8 managerial aspects training will be conducted for 10-15 community leaders. 300 farmers from 10 projects will be trained (20 trainings) on different issues related to agriculture practices (moisture conservation methods, training on fodder treatment by salt, urea, moll-sage etc, preparation of vermin composting), various aspects of indigenous agriculture system and use of biomass in the fields.. Demonstration will be done on improved land management practices through agro forestry. 5 exposure visits will be conducted to Bharatpur or Alwar, Rajasthan Gowseva sangh-jaipur, Maharana Pratap Technical Agriculture University, Udaipur to show solar energy dependent equipments.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
10 village Samities namely ?Krishi Mitra Mandals? KMM will be formed in order to enhance the capacities of the farmers. Training camps will be organized to make the community members aware of the energy saving techniques. Field demonstration on different cultivation practices, crop cycle, etc will be done. Environment Awareness campaign, Rallies, quiz competition, orientation at village level among the school children will be organized.
