Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Capacity building workshops involving the communities on themes such as sustainable knowledge about medicinal plants, importance of health treatments trough plant knowledge. Workshops on the administration of soon to be local farmacies will also be regarded.

Notable Community Participation

Through the years the Jequitinhonha Valley region has been victim to the constant degradation of local resources, with this many traditional communities have positioned themselves as protectors of the land through sustainable and harmonic relationships with the land, particularly through the use of medicinal plants. The project will include over 10,000 families where the majority are women of the Organized Women of the Jequitinhonha Valley Region Association.

Project Results

Community Pharmacies of Itaobim and Itinga were revitalized. 60 people trained in the activities of the project. 14 natives species and 14 cultivated species are been used. Participation in an Agroecology Caravan, with sale of the hand made medicines and exchange. Realization of Regional Health and Biodiversity Seminar : rights and heritage of communities from the Jequitinhonha Valley, with the participation of 100 people, being 60 women, 30 young and 10 seniors.
The project had contributed for the conservation of 900 hectares in the Chapada do Lagoão Permanently Area of Preservation (APA), where were collected de traditional and local medicines plants.
Community Pharmacies are generating income of about USD 250.00 a month for each participant. The community reports the greatest satisfaction toward more and more people looking for traditional hand made medicines. The Community Pharmacies serve more around one thousand people.
