Integrated Communities strengthen the sustanaible extraction of the northern region of Cerrado Mineiro

Provide families involved in the production profit and knowledge process necessary information for product formulation in order to conduct the harvest of fruits of the Cerrado, Caatinga and agroecological areas, in units of production decentralized in which their base work is recovery, environmental preservation and food administration through the benefit of sustainability.

Notable Community Participation

The northern region of the state of Minas Gerais has a rich biodiversity which brings potential for local communities to improve economical activities aside from breeding livestock and agriculture. Rural wealth has been making a quiet exit, where many individuals cannot survive with the low wages. The community of Sambaiba in the Januária county has a vast potential of fruits production but lacks infrastructure to implement a formal production. The project will create capacity building opportunities to improve benefit from the fruits generating profit and improving local economy. 100 families will be involved.

Policy Influence

The organizations responsible for the project's execution have been granted seats at the local council's that deal with Cerrado's biodiversity. Therefore, they have direct impact on the approval of policies.

The participants of the project are already articulating with other organizations that, likewise work with sustainable extractivism

Project sustainability

The project is generating an average income of USD 79,66 for each of the 51 families involved, and there is a large prospect of amplifying this number. That means that the project has means of sustaining itself after the end of the SGP grant

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

These activities serve as an example for the entire local population which sees results in the production and information dissemination among the local communities.

Project Results

The project served 14 communities and reformed two fruit processing units.
At the end of the project 32 people participated directly, 16 being women, 9 men, 2 young people and 5 elderly.
In total, 58 people were trained in workshops on good manufacturing practices, sustainable management and agribusiness management;
The monetary income of R$ 239.00 per family is being generated at the beginning of production.
About 1/3 of the products were consumed by the families and one part is stocked. There is potential to further increase family income.
All the necessary equipment for the production in the agro industry were acquired.
Sustainable extraction is being carried out in an area of ??approximately 450 hectares.
Caritas Diocesana de Januária has partnerships and projects with various organizations, and is able to continue monitoring and possible investments in the initiative.
