Project Characteristics and Results

Replication of project activities

Based on the experience of Clemente traditional fecho de pasto community (BRA/13/18), in Correntina, BA, other 18 neighboring communities organized themselves and had their project selected in the 2015 call for proposals. The idea is to generate the same level of protection that was reached by Clemente community through the project, avoiding land grabbing, uncontrolled fires and cattle degradation in the riparian forests and creeks. The project will also strengthen Fecho de Pastos Communities State Network, that is being established to promote exchange between the communities and give support in ensuring their traditional territories.

Notable Community Participation

In Bahia there is an area where the Fechos de Pastos community resides. The area covers preserved lands managed by the Cerrado alive project, surrounded by 4 water sources that provide water distribution. 50 families inhabit the region and work collecting medicinal plants and native fruits for community consumption. The project will involve 30 families directly with an estimate of 75 people involved by the end of the project in order to create sustainable harvest, production and water preservation practices.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project focuses on improving livelihoods through the awarness of the community towards sustainable practices in order to recover the region´s degraded areas, where water springs and native forest will be prioritized.

Policy Influence

The project influenced the Agrarian Development State Coordination (CDA) in titling public lands that are traditionally occupied by the communities, requiring the application of the Law Nº 12.910 from October 2011.

Capacity - Building Component

The project will work on capacity building activities with the families of the communities of Fechos de Pastos, to enabel the envolvement with native seed preservation and recovery of water sources to promote preservation of the Cerrado.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

These activities serve as an example for the entire local population which sees results in the production and information dissemination among the local communities.

Project Results

The project,, envolving 75 families, promoted the conservation of Cerrado in a 3,424 hectares territory of a fecho de pasto traditional community through networking in order to avoid land grabbing by neighboring farmers, fencing 30 hectares of springs and riparian forests to avoid cattle degradation, reduce erosion and promote recovery, 9 km of firebreaks. These activities generated 564,233 tCO2e avoided emissions.
