STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY BASED CONSERVATION AND SUSTIANABLE USE OF BIODIVERSITY PRODUCTS
STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY BASED CONSERVATION AND SUSTIANABLE USE OF BIODIVERSITY PRODUCTS
The project will promote biodiversity conservation, Contribute to community empowerment and enhance livelihood of people in the Bolmie and Fahdor communities. Building on collaboration already initiated, RAAP will work in partnership with the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), community leaders and the local people to implement the project.

The project will increase the awareness of communities and build their knowledge and skills on environmental conservation activities and the importance of biodiversity as well as managing and sustaining it. The tree-planting approach offers a streamlined response to the diverse ecological challenges confronting the at-risk Lake Piso ecosystems.
Trees are important to environmental protection. They prevent global warming and reduce pollution; provide shelter for many forms of animal life and are considered the most efficient carbon sink. For these reasons, a tree-planting initiative would contribute to conserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change while addressing the specific problems of degradation and deforestation and habitat loss.

RAAP is intervening on the premise that sustainable use of the environment is essential to alleviating poverty. The proposed project will contribute to mitigating the ecological risks to the savannah and coastal ecosystems of the Lake Piso Nature Reserve. The project will also contribute specifically towards increasing livelihood opportunities of Bolmie and Fahdor communities, taking into account their long-term livelihood sustainability. It will build up strategic efforts to increase the skills and knowledge of communities by providing trainings and awareness on biodiversity conservation and tree-planting. The project will work to bring about social cohesion and peace building within these communities.
