This project will not only improve the documentation of Pohnpei traditional knowledge but it will also help involve communities in protecting the biodiversity by replanting trees and restoring the forest habitat. This project will improve documentation of traditional knowledge and facilitate the passing of this knowledge to younger generations, as well as promote the preservation and restoration of the island?s natural biodiversity. As a result in the increased knowledge of the natural resources, Pohnpei?s youth will have a better understanding of land use practices and promote conservation and sustainable use of the Forests. In addition, the reduction of clearing in the upland forest will allow for regeneration of native flora, promoting biodiversity and help stabilize the soil, thereby reducing the risk of erosion, landslides and other hazards. Reduced soil erosion will also lead to more abundant and better quality drinking water for rural populations and improve the health and biodiversity of Pohnpei?s reefs by reducing sedimentation.
