Promoting renewable energy production in farming communities in Barbados
Promoting renewable energy production in farming communities in Barbados
The Promoting renewable energy production in farming communities in Barbados project focuses the practical application and utilization of renewable energy within farming communities across Barbados.

This project proposes to demonstrate that agricultural operations, specifically small and/or medium scale farms in Barbados can minimise their greenhouse gas emissions by using renewable sources of energy, thereby utilising a negligible amount of electricity from the national grid. Concomitantly, the project will also allow farms whose productivity potential is hampered by the absence of easy access to inexpensive electricity to be able to access information on strategies to improve their operations. The project intends to demonstrate the opportunities available through:
i. The use of photovoltaic energy systems for electrical production;
ii. Biogas production for heating; as well as
iii. Solar drying for crop production.

PROJECT GOAL

The goal of the project is to enhance the application of renewable energy technologies on farms in Barbados.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
1. To map existing farm practices and assess opportunities for the use of renewable energy sources on farms in Barbados
2. To establish one demonstration farm showcasing the practical application and utility of alternative and renewable energy sources for farms
3. To train 30 farmers in Barbados to effectively install and utilise renewable energy sources on their farms
4. To facilitate multi-sectoral dialogue around the opportunities and barrier to the use of renewable energy in the agricultural sector
