Promoting tree planting for poverty reduction and environmental protection in Laberpito and Tal in Billiri LGA Gombe State
Laberpito community is a poor farming community with a population of about six hundred (600) people. The settlement that use to be a bushy forest, hence the name Laberpito in the local language now has environmental challenges due to human activities. These include soil erosion, lack of clean drinking water, poverty and malnutrition. This project if implemented will help in regaining the soil fertility, erosion control, lifting the standard of living, socially and economically. The project will begin with drilling of bore hole, construction of overhead tank, with solar energy pump fitted. Next will be the establishing of orchard site (in which land has been donated by community as co-financing). The community has also agreed to be involved in all the manual activities of the project such as clearing, fencing, digging etc. They have agreed to keep close watch on all the acquired materials against theft and vandalization. Among themselves they will select volunteer guards for the orchard, overhead tank and pump, for the benefit of generations to come.
