FUTURE OF URMIA LAKE, POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INTERVENTIONS
Project background:
Human activities in the lake basin occurred during the last three decades and great environmental damages have made 70 percent of Urmia dried, which was one of the nine important biospheres on the earth. Building dams on the main of rivers, indiscriminate harvesting of groundwater which is non-renewable and etc. So far some small actions such as fertilizing lakes- that were not successful- has been stopped in order to stop drying lakes.
These days, among professionals, other methods such as transporting Aras River and Caspian Sea water to the lake are discussed, which in another way may be repeating the errors. Sustainable development should become the base of any possible solution for revitalizing the Urmia Lake. Part of the solution will be the communities and the locals of Satellite wetlands.
The positive experiences of Community Based revitalization of Urmia Lake Satellite wetlands in the south of Urmia Lake will be included as well.
Project activities include:
- Awareness at national and international level to speed up the rehabilitation of the lake.
- Lobbying to avoid doing wrong methods like in the past on the procedure of rehabilitating the lake.
- Target groups will be authorities, professionals, and people especially those living in the affected provinces.
- Documenting the exploitation of natural resources and presenting the possible alternatives.
- Documentation including making films and taking photos. There are two films with the durations of 4 and 20 minutes in Persian and English languages. Pictures form the project. Will be given.
- Presenting videos and pictures for local communities in order to participate in rehabilitation of Urmia Lake based on sustainable development and good cases of South Urmia Lake satellite Wetlands
- Presenting more scientific solutions and avoid doing actions that will destroy the lake.
