Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves Project
Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves Project
The proposed project aims to achieve improved health status, increased protection of forest and enhanced environmental condition. Following are immediate/short-term objectives:

I. To train 100 women from each of the 20 villages/settlements of UC Saranan, District Pishin on construction of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?;
II. To provide material and technical guidance to 800 households/families for construction of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?

The proposed project is comprised on mainly three components (i) capacity building; (ii) technical guidance; (iii) material support. Following is brief description of key proposed activities:

a) Project inception: KWS will arrange a project inception seminar in Pishin City where all the key stakeholders will be invited- beneficiaries from the target UC; District Government Officials; Civil Society Representatives; Media Representative.
b) Stakeholder consultation: KWS will arrange one stakeholder?s consultation workshop where the representatives of all the key departments/NGOs/private sector and media will be invited for their feedback and suggestions to finalize the project implementation strategy.
c) Selection of beneficiaries: KWS will conduct a small quick survey of the target union council for the purpose of selection of beneficiaries. As proposed 100 women will be selected from 20 target villages/settlements (on average 5 women per village). These will be trained on the skills related to making of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?. Similarly, 800 households will be selected for provision of technical guidance and materials for construction of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?. Out of the selected 800 households 100 households will be of those women who will be trained on the skills making of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?
d) Conducting of training workshops: KWS will arrange 4 workshops for training of 100 women on making of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?. Each workshop will be of three days duration and 25 women will be trained in one workshop. KWS will hire a trainer/mason who has substantial knowledge, understanding and skills on stove making.
e) Procurement of material: KWS will procure the required materials for construction of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?. As a strategy, KWS will ensure that the local materials are used and procured for construction of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?. The Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves will be materlistic in nature. The material will include: 3 Metal Doors; 6 Hinges; 3 Pipes; 1 Top Cover; 1 fire grate; 1 air accelerator. The complete material will be packages as ?Material Package?. One Material Package will be for one family/household.
f) Distribution of material to selected beneficiary households: Once the material is procured, it will be distributed to the 800 beneficiary households. One family/household will be provided one ?Material Package?.
g) Provision of on-site technical guidance: KWS will provide on-site technical guidance to the selected households for construction of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?. This guidance will be provided through the same trainer who has trained 100 women. In addition, the project team will provide guidance and the trained women in each of the target community.
h) Construction of ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves?: After receiving the Material Package, the beneficiary?s families will start constructing the ?Energy Efficient Smokeless Stoves? in their homes. The KWS team and trained women will monitor the construction process.
Anticipated Results
i. With the introduction of these stoves the amount of fuel wood consumed will be reduced resulting in lower GHG emissions and savings in biomass;
ii. Health hazards created due to the use of inferior quality firewood will be reduced.
iii. Women, who are exposed to smoke for prolonged periods when they are engaged in cooking, will get a relief.
iv. Incidence of smoke exposure related disease like Tuberculosis and Eye Diseases would decrease.
v. Cooking will become efficient resulting in the decreased workload of women.
vi. Dependency of the poor on rich landlords for the provision of fuel wood will be reduced which might lead to their social empowerment.
vii. Introduction of smokeless stoves will reduce the pollution produced by the burning of poor quality firewood.
viii. Storage of fuel-wood is a problem for villagers and smokeless stoves will solve this problem too.
ix. Cost of transportation of fuel-wood will be saved.

With the introduction of the smokeless stove, the women cooking on it no longer inhale the poisonous smoke and neither will the smoke get into their eyes. Women complain of problems such as watering eyes, blackened walls, utensils, clothes and hands and open fire hazards to children. The smokeless stove is time saving, energy saving and is much less exhaustive for the women cooking on it.
