MANGROVE PLANTATION & RESTORATION THROUGH COMMUNITY PARTICIPATORY APPROACHES IN KATH WARO ISLAND, UNION COUNCIL JUNGO JALBANI, SHAH BUNDER
The project mainly focuses on involving communities in conservation, rehabilitation and re-plantation on mangroves on Kath Waro island in Union Council Jungo Jalbani of Indus Delta. Activities proposed in the project are mainly focus on afforestation, educating and involving the local coastal communities in rehabilitation re-plantation and conservation of mangroves to protect ecologically important coastal areas. Activities associated with the main objective would lead more sensitized local coastal communities.

Objective and Proposed Activities

Objective 01: Mangrove (Aviciena) Plantation & Restoration through Participatory Community Approaches in Kath Waro Island, Union Council Jungo Jalbani, Taluka Shah Bunder.

Activity Streems

? Intensive surveys of the area and careful choice of site have to be undertaken before mangroves planting.
? Approximately planting 1200 acres of mangroves in the proposed areas.
? Rehabilitation and planting monitoring reports.
? Raising 2 nurseries of mangroves forests for transplantation.
? Transplanting on newly identified blank spaces in the mudflats.
? Rehabilitation to cover and fill the damaged mangrove forests on the Kath Waro Island.

Objective 02: Capacity building on sustainable management of mangroves among local communities, NGOs, policy makers and relevant management agencies.

Activity Streams
? Organize meetings with community and stakeholders to raise awareness on the importance, threats and rational management of mangroves.
? Community mobilization and formation of COs for protection of mangrove forests.

? Production of mangrove awareness materials highlighting the sustainable use of mangrove forest and general information
? Dissemination of awareness materials to general public as well as media.
Indicate impacts on participants / beneficiaries.

The successful demonstration of the project Plantation and Restoration of Mangroves Campaign) in the area will lead to impact as follows.

7.1 : Related to Humans

? Social Impacts: Increased social cohesive by understanding them to improve living condition immediately around them.

? Economic and Financial Impacts: Managing fisheries by introducing shrimp forms and fishing ponds so that the population can improve their economic and financial needs.

7.2 : Related to Environment

? Land Related Impact: a general reduction in the sea intrusion

? Air Related Impacts: General improvement in quality of air through reduction in Co Co2 and other gasses emission and more forests to act as sink.
? Reduced risks of natural disasters especially cyclones and sea intrusion

7.3 : Demonstration Value

Project design revolves around the demonstration of livelihood improvement through the conservation mangrove forests.

7.4 : Experience Value

Lesson learnt during the implementation of project will be shared in the consultative meetings and seminars at district level. Experience will documented as a ready references for the future intervention.

7.5 : Potential Risks

The targeted area is prone to sudden onset disasters such as tropical cyclones and floods. Such situation can create hindrances in achieving stipulated objectives and time frame
