Adopt a River - A Tree Planting Project to Restore and Rehabilitate River Banks, Improve Water Quality and Quantity in the Isnare River.

This Planning Grant will help the grantee to design a project using a participatory process. The goal is to develop consensus on the way forward and to develop support. The grant will enable the grantee to undertake research, convene meetings, organize a workshop, document the process and hire a consultant/facilitator to assist them in preparing the Full Grant Project Proposal.

Replication of project activities

The grantee used a diary format to record project activities. which though descriptive and less anlalytical, gave the details of all project activities and the degree of participation of its members and other stakeholders.

Notable Community Participation

The grantee will convene many meetings with several stakeholders, particularly with land owners. There will also be at least three (3) workshops. A transparent and participatory process is proposed.

Project sustainability

The project will be developed into a Full Grant.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

There will be some targeted public awareness focusing on stakeholders and the community at large.

Capacity - Building Component

There will be workshops dedicated to training members of the group in project management and sustainable methods of tree planting.

Linkages gef projects

Will be linked with the Iyanola Big-GEF Project which will be implemented by Saint Lucia with assistance from UNEP.

Project Results

The project results at the output and outcome levels were as follows:

(i) Partnership: the group sought and obtained assistance from the Forestry Department in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology and as a result the members were able to use tried and tested procedures and approaches. The project was also beneficial to the aforementioned agency because it fitted within their strategic plans for Saint Lucia. This was an excellent example of a mutually beneficial relationship between a Government Agency and a CSO.

(ii) Capacity Development: The project approach was interactive and included both theoretical and practical components. Members were exposed to tree planting techniques and organizational development techniques by professionals. The members of the group are now more capable, self-assured and are ready to move on to the Full Grant Phase.

(ii) Baseline Assessment: this assessment was complete with respect to water quality and capacity needs. This will serve as a basis for the Full Grant Implementation Phase.

The group now has a better appreciation of how to develop, implement and manage projects.
