To Conduct Feasibility Study on Community-Based Conservation of Biodiversity and Rivers in Kampung Skiat Baru, Bau District, Kuching, Sarawak.
The direct impacts of ?development? often brought about forest degradation, natural resource depletion, environmental devastation, biodiversity loss, etc. As for the dayak community, it also results in the loss of customary land, forest and biological resouces as well as food security. The daily livelihoods of the Indigenous community and rural women are continually threaten by development activities surrounding their village, particular due to the loss of source of livelihood from depletion of forest and non-timber forest produce. This project initiated by WADESA aims to support the local community particularly women in conserving the biodiversity and rivers in Skiat Baru Village. Realising the importance of taking ownership over the community resources, the villagers want to restore, rehabilitate and conserve the Jobing River (important source of livelihood), and the Siboyuh River (important source of water supply) from further degradation and pollution. This project aims to conduct study on the state of environment and natural resources thereby formulating appropriate community traditions of conservation to reverse the trends of biodiversity degradation in the village and surrounding area, as well as establishing a river restoration programme.
