1.First grant tranch allowed the organisation to engage national experts to conduct training and marine assessment. Two local workshops were conducted to gather traditional knowledge. On same occassion, opportunity was used also to build capacity of participants with conducting local reef monitoring. This resulted in a further marine area of 46.45 hectares being pledged towards the YUS conservation Area. SGP grant allowed the engagement of a marine ranger who will overlook the pledged marine area. This tranch has facilitated testing of cocoa beans quality resulting in 562.5 kg was purchased by Queen Emma chocolates. This has enhanced farmers efforts with and increased generation of income by 30%.

2.Program was able to engage and train a marine ranger for the newly pledged marine reef area of 46.46 hectares. Ranger was given on-site training with skills consisting of snorkelling, survey techniques, patrol data collection.

3. Inception workshop was held in two communities, Ronji and Singorokai with 40 participants. Community mapping activities were initiatiaed to identify reefs, dugong sightings, turtlenesting and sea grass beds. Better understanding of marine ecosystem health encouraged communities to end destructive fishing methods.

4. 21 participants were trained to conduct marine monitoring using combination of theory and practical exercises with introduction into local marine ecology and monitoring methods.

5. A needs assessment was also conducted to in four primary villages reaching at least 150 people in the coastal cocoa growing region. A training was identified as much needed covering selected topics on improved farming of cocoa.

6. TKCP also supported in establishing a direct trade relationship with PNG-based Queen Emma Chocolate Company (a subsidiary of Paradise Foods), enabling YUS farmers to deliver cocoa to the company at a premium rate of approximately PGK2.00/kg more than standard market rates. Queen Emma recognizes the added value of environmentally- and socially-responsible sourcing, and has developed its ?YUS Kakao? chocolate bar product to highlight the role of this project in the conservation of the YUS landscape. Queen Emma continues to distribute YUS Kakao chocolate bars throughout several areas of PNG including Port Moresby and Lae.
