CAPACITY BUILDING ON INTEGRATED AQUACULTURE AT NAMAGONDO VILLAGE, UKEREWE DISTRICT, MWANZA.
Context:
Fish catch in Lake Victoria is dwindling. Scientists say that about 500 fish species are now locally extinct in Lake Victoria. The main reason for the decline of fish is overfishing. The other reasons for decline include: massive degradation of catchment areas and the shoreline, illegal fishing (by use of seine, trawlers as well as poison) and pollution. Given the current status, it has been suggested by various researchers and local communities that wider adoption of fish ponds by farmers can expand alternative sources of fish supply and this may reduce fishing pressure in the Lake and allow for stock-breeding. This project seeks to build up on this view by promoting integrated aquaculture for increased fish supply from alternative sources. Under the proposed project, rearing of fish will be integrated with farming and wetland conservation for sustainable development at the local level.
Project?s Primary Objective:
To increase fish supply through an integrated aquaculture and natural resources management.
