FSM: Let's Go Local! Food Security and Livelihood with Pohnpei Women's Council Communities
By introducing simple locally appropriate energy efficient and solar technologies for processing and preserving foods, renewable resources and the local by-product (waste) coconut shell would replace firewood, kerosene, LPG and electricity dependent food processing methods and limit the reliance on industrially produced packaged food travelling extremely long distances.
There has been a significant depletion of biodiversity of traditional food crops. Known Climate Resilient local varieties will be a focus of ensuring biodiversity in the context of high climate variability into the future.
With the importation of packaged, processed foods there has been a movement away from local food production and maintenance shifting to a reliance on imported foods, thus affecting biodiversity, waste management and environmental sustainability on these small remote islands. Furthermore, a loss of indigenous knowledge on biodiversity, planting and uses of these crops has accelerated recently.
