Empowering the youths of Gola Forest to tackle climate change though the propagation of fuel efficient Eco stove in the Gola forest Area
The project is aimed at providing development benefits to communities that are linked to the protection of the Gola National Forest Reserve. As part of the efforts for the anticipation to enhance communities to participate in development projects and be provided skills training as an incentive for participating in climate change activities and upholding the rule of law around the reserve. It is anticipated that the project is in line with the Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy (IPRS) for Liberia, will enhance employment opportunities and other productive economic activities in the relevant communities.
This project will assess whether the communities understand and accept the issues of climate change and to what extent the policies of climate change is impacting their lives. The education on climate change and the principals of mitigating climate change will be addressed by providing communities with efficient energy stoves. The provision of efficient energy stoves to communities will enable them participate in the mitigation of climate change and to empower communities to jointly collaborate with the FDA, to monitor and report on climate change and illegal forestry activities.
This project encompasses with key objectives: Mitigate climate change and reduced deforestation in North-West Liberia through youth-led construction and distribution of fuel-efficient stoves for vulnerable female households.
In other to achieve these mentioned objectives the following activities will be undertaken; Provide access for knowledge and experiential learning on climate change and the consequences of deforestation in rural communities,
Training four youth groups to manage projects making and producing ceramic stoves,
Improved knowledge in four target villages of some of the key drivers of climate change and the consequences of deforestation in rural communities,
Reduced volume of firewood and charcoal consumption in domestic fires in four pilot villages, improved human welfare by the provision of a safer cooking technology, Strengthening Sight Support Group (SSG) in the buffer zone communities around the propose park, Identifying and strengthening climate change methods and Work with relevant organization to set up mechanisms to implement and monitor incentive agreements. Therefore, Piso Conservation Forum is requesting for Forty -two Thousand nine hundred fifty five United State Dollar (US$42,955.00) for a period of one year to accomplish these tasks.
The methodologies designed for these activities are; Participatory based approaches, Incentive based approach, and working with government agencies and local partners.
The project will achieved the following results: 75% project communities aware of their roles and responsibilities and that of other stakeholders in climate change; 30% increased participation of locals in management and decision making about the reserve; one alternative livelihood option established and functioning; and one active community based network strengthened.
