Orhanli River Plant Spring Project
The Orhanl? Karakoç Stream situated within the grounds of Orhanl? village in Seferihisar is a running water system that has managed to protect its natural surroundings to date. As well as holding importance for the biological richness of the area surrounding the steam it also has great significance in being the source for surface water deposits and underground water. The healthy flow of the stream is crucial for sustainable landuse practices, soil protection and adaptation to climate change. In previous years gravel had been taken from the banks of the stream and the stream bed?s durability was weekend, which has resulted in a faster erosion of the soil compared to natural conditions. Orhanl? Köyü Society developed a project in 2012, to prevent soil erosion in the arable land and to restore the riparian habitats and biodiversity along the stream. The UNDP GEF-SGP supported this project. Orhanl? Karakoç River Land Protection Project used traditional rehabilitation methods with local riparian shrub and tree species, at five pilot areas. This first phase of the project has shown that these traditional methods are extremely efficient, yet there are some weaknesses and opportunities to multiply the results of the project to other areas. The most important weakness was noted as being lack of saplings of local tree and shrub species, which, ideally, shall be available consistently to low costs. Besides, the most important opportunity was identified as availability of villagers and landowners ready to voluntarily participate in this rehabilitation project. The herewith presented second phase of the project addresses these main weaknesses and opportunities in a way to sustain the results of the project beyond its expiration. A nursery will be established at the Orhanl? Stream in an area belonging to the Seferihisar Municipality to provide saplings to farmers in a consistent way and for free. This nursery will be named as ?Orhanl? River Plant Spring?. The project also includes a number of dissemination activities on this traditional river rehabilitation method, such as publicizing a poster, demonstration projects and a workshop. The target audience of these dissemination activities is stakeholders and villagers in ?zmir Peninsula. The project will be implemented in cooperation with Orhanl? Köyü Society and Seferihisar Municipality.
