Promoting Conservation and Sustainable Use of fisheries resources by Building Capacity and Seeking Alternatives for Fishers
The goal of the project is to (i) develop a culture of responsible and sustainable utilization within the commercial fishing industry, and (ii) identify possible alternatives that will reduce impact on existing resources. The first goal contributes to the COMPACT Strategy?s second and third objectives which state ?To promote the protection conservation and sustainable use of resources of the Belize Barrier Reef System?by community groups, community based organizations and the general public? and ?to develop and/or enhance the management capacities of community groups who use and impact the resources of the BBRS-WHS as well as those who participate in the co-management of the protected areas?. The second goal addresses the first objective of the COMPACT Phase II Strategy which is: ?to expand the sustainable livelihoods options for community groups?who impact the reef system with a view towards reducing stressors on the BBRS-WHS?.
