Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

? Upgrading living standard of targeted 100 families. ? Training for community members on sustainable water resource management.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

? Minimizing human ?elephant conflict through the project activities. ? Minimizing Negative Impacts from target communities to the lahugala national park. The locals are continuously advised by governmental officers on the importance of protecting the remaining forest areas and fauna (specially the elephants).

Planning non gef grant

A scale up project on Improved Thumba Karawila , Momordica dioica ,(A local variety of vegetables with higher medicinal and market value) based scientific home gardening will be initiated after the GEF/SGP project .This project will be funded by the Korean Government

Project sustainability

Due to the approximate three times increase in total paddy harvest caused by the rehabilitation of Yalpotha tank, the household income averagely increased from 215 USD to 322 USD per season. A women centered credit society has been established to empower the female community of the beneficiary village. Also project sustainability will be guided and monitored by the selected community members, such as ?Wel Vidane? (the person who is in charge of the paddy cultivation process of the village) thee people will monitor and maintain the continuing and systematic harvesting of benefits. As a next step external funds derived to scale up the project.

Gender Focus

Females are actively contributing towards the project in many ways. A young female work as the field coordinator and all the responsible positions in the savings society (from president to the committee member) are held by women of the community. The women will also market the home garden products.

Notable Community Participation

Fifty families have been selected as the relevant beneficiaries out of 100 families in the surrounded area based on their level of poverty, 27 of the main beneficiary in each family are less than 24 years of age. About 40 males and 20 females contribute direct labor for the tank rehabilitation work on daily payment basis.

Policy Influence

The project has satisfactorily influenced on National Climate change policy of Sri Lanka under its Policy statement: Adaptation Part (B)(6). Conservation of water resources and biodiversity, since the project has taken action to minimize the impacts on water resources due to temperature rise caused by climate change. Also the project has promoted integrated watershed and water resources management through behaviors adaptive to changing weather patterns and trends while enhancing climate change resilience of natural ecosystems and its diversity.

This project directly focus for adaptation for climate change and conserving national water bodies.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Through this project the food security of both human and animals will be increased as the tank will help to store water during the drought period to be used for paddy cultivation and also improved home gardens. The tank bed also provides luch vegetation and water for grazing animals including elephants. Access to markets and finance will also be increased by the project

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Willing to get co-finencing support from Agrarian service department and farmers association.

Project Results

1. Water retention capacity of Yaloptha Tank increased by renovating 0.75 km of the tank bund.
2. Water supply secured for the local communities to cultivate paddy for two seasons of year instead of one.
3. After the renovation of the tank 220 acres of paddy lands were cultivated which is almost three times of the existed cultivation area.
4. Increased food availability and habitat enrichment for fauna (Elephants and other mammals, water birds, amphibian, fish, crocodiles and butterflies)
5. Livelihood development of beneficiaries through modified home gardens.
6. Empowerment of beneficiary women through the established loan schemes and Women?s organization.
