Community driven Mangrove resource management conservation and restoration in selected villages around the Bhitarkanika mangrove areas.
The focus of the project is empowering the local communities for sustainable managing and conserving the mangrove resources. It will create 14 ha mangrove forest and more importantly promote ?ecological-hydro-logical restoration method, which is not only economic but also an efficient approach? to restore mangrove forest. Training to local community volunteers and village mangrove council members (VMC)on how to restore and conserve the mangrove resources in a suitable manner. Plan to develop expertise among key personnel from community, so that they can extend the knowledge to others within their community. The project will promote climate resilient livelihood for mangrove dependent families, they will equip with skills so as to help them take up alternative and supplementary livelihoods without hampering mangrove forests.
Mangroves, the life supporting system (fisheries, potable use, tourism, storm and cyclone buffers) those are critical to economic activities for many coastal communities. Mangroves have a high potential to reduce climate change ? induced threats, particularly the impacts of cyclones and storm surges; simultaneously they provide livelihood resources for local ecosystem and the local communities. It checks erosion due to flooding and will help in increasing fish, crab population and other biodiversity as well as check soil erosion.

Capacity - Building Component
Awareness campaign will be organized for 5000 community members directly and 15000 people indirectly on mangroves. Demonstration on best restoration practices for establishing protection mechanism for 60 ha of mangrove forest area in the buffer zone of Bhitarkanika. 3000 school children will be educated regarding mangrove through class room teaching in 8 schools.
