Improving the quality of life and livelihood of rural Community through sustainable use of local resources at S.24 Paraganas district,West Bengal.

A similar project has been successfully completed at Sagar Island S. 24. Most activities will be centered on Biodiversity conservation, socio-economic up-liftment through local resource management & equitable sharing of benefits by the local community at selected villages of Sagar Island (7 villages), Pathar Pratima (6 villages) & Diamond Harbour Block-II (4 villages),District South Parganas,West Bengal involving a total HH of about 7500.These will be done mainly by empowering the local community through proper training (especially on capacity building, eco-friendly and alternative employment generation activities like Vermi-composting ,kitchen gardening, diversified integrated bio-farming including poultry, livestock, fishery, forestry, etc.) as climate resilient livelihood development to uplift themselves on their own through effective conservation and management of local resources , soil health and most importantly their living environment. This undoubtedly resulted in Sustainable economic growth along with biodiversity conservation. relevant enterprise development is considered as one of the major activities.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

20 boys and girls will be trained on VDP to develop their knowledge & skills and formulate village level action plan. 25 candidates will be trained on IFS. 75 candidates will be trained on Nutritional kitchen Garden & fruits plant propagation. 75 members will be trained on poultry and 75 on goatary including at least 3 women who will be trained as Master trainer of Livestock (Amargarm Pranibandhu), 30 members will be trained on different vocational trades to enhance their knowledge, skills and capacity to manage and utilize the local resources for sustainable agricultural yields and to increase their income from different sources. 50 candidates will be trained on production of vermin composting and other organic inputs. 10 candidates will be trained on education & health service provide.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Awareness camps on health, hygiene, education, energy, plantation etc will be organized to improve the quality of life (health and education standard). 3 Community Study Centres will be formed for supporting 50/60 children/ centre. One community Development Co-operatives will be established for selling locally produced items. Awareness programs (5 demonstrations) on solar cooker (without any carbon emission), conventional gobar gas plants with fixed cemented dome, and improved cook stoves, solar light will be organized.

Gender Focus

SHGs and other groups will be selected and formed in the locality where over 75%-80% of the selected small holders will be women. Both men and women will be involved in weekly crop development, maintain records of meetings, farming etc. Small and micro enterprises will be linked to the banks and customers. Adult education classes will be conducted for women and girls who are illiterate. Education support to boys and girls attending school and particularly to backward and dropout students. Individual families (at least 50 in each target areas) will have the facilities of using non-conventional energy. Arrangements of loans will be done for the followers of organic farming for setting up a system for use at domestic level. Work for health awareness and total sanitation for improving conditions for preventing them from diseases will be done.

The NGO will work with the government in achieving national environmental priorities leading to either scaling or replication of the project.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The activities/progress of the project will be depicted in the form of discussions, debates, surveys, role plays, photography, drawings, flip charts, posters and banners, video recording, audio recording etc.

The beneficiaries are not indigenous community.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The main aim of the project is to improve the quality of life and reduce the poverty of the rural communities in a sustainable way by various interventions in diversified livelihood options, especially on climate resilient development & biodiversity conservation. The community empowerment will be scaled up by strengthening community groups for establishing strong baseline, finalizing the tangibles, exploring avenues for increasing social participation and enhancing their incomes. 100 nutritional kitchen garden will be developed on every house, 50 pond fishery units including 6 fish seeds rearing units will be established, 75 poultry, goatary, duckery and other on farm activities will be done in order to improve soil health, water conservation, tree cover, reducing malnutrition through easily available seasonable vegetable from nutrition garden and generating income through improved farming techniques (IFC, organic farming etc) and from off farm activities.

Notable Community Participation

Training of selected village youth (girls) as Community Health Workers (Amargram Swasthya Bandhu) on common disease such as cold, cough, fever, headache etc. Young boys and girls will be involved in catalyzing the social mobilization process and implementation of planned activities.

Project Results

* 100 varieties of traditional paddy including 20 saline tolerant cultivated in 535 hectares of land.
* Established seed stores of salt tolerant paddy seed and other crop and vegetable varieties.
* 12 ponds at three villages (Phulbari, Kashtala & Sibpur) were cleaned and treated with bleaching powder and lime.
* Sustainable farming methods introduced and established a saving and credit scheme for sustainability of the project activities.
* Access of farmers to local and state authorities, research stations and other stakeholders enhanced for information on local agricultural biodiversity and improve information sharing.
* SHG members provided with traditional variety of deshi poultry. Local variety of maize and mung seed etc conserved.
