Integrated Agro Organic Farming & Wasteland Development through Short duration cultivable Lac Host Plantation of Flemingia Semialata Roxb.

This project intends to address the unemployment and livelihood issue, as tribal/PTG (Primitive Tribal Group) of Bonai subdivision in dist. Sundargarh are living below poverty line due to small land holdings. An integrated approach of agro organic farming concept will increase the agriculture output and the income of these marginal farmers. Another issue addressed by this project is to develop the degraded land by forestation of fast growing lac host Flemingia Semialata. This will produce the valuable strain of Kusmi Lac. By doing so the tribal beneficiaries will enhance their income and bio-conservation of Flemingia species on deforested land will also take place.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

100 SHGs will be formed with equal participation from both men and women. The project aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and to build an entrepreneurial and management capacity of tribal women to enhance their empowerment. Men members of SHGs involved will develop their vision and skills in the field of integrated agro farming. Saving account will be opened for the members in leading bank of the area and will be provided easy access to loan.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

100 farmers club (10 members each) will be formed, each of the 20 villages selected will have 5 farmers clubs for review and evaluation of activities. Retail management will be done by opening a retail outlet on highway. Marketing will be done for all the integrated agro farming products. The project will create awareness and interest among small and medium farmers through demonstrations to adopt integrated farming leading to higher income on regular basis.

Policy Impact

Bank linkage will be done with DRDA, ITDA, NABARD and Lead banks of the area for loan, subsidy etc which will be made available for those farmers who want to continue their activities. Forest Department and Van Suruksha Samiti (VSS) will cooperate in this project for restoration of Biodiversity and environment protection.

Capacity - Building Component

Both Theoretical and practical training will be done on soil management, agro organic cultural management practices on vegetable crops, organic pesticides preparation and application management, improved irrigation management (sprinkle irrigation, Drip irrigation system), commercial horticulture cultivation and practices.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Media campaigns through leaflets distribution and newspapers reports will be done to create awareness- rising at the local level.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at integrated agro organic farming & waste land development through short duration cultivable Lac-Host plantation of Flemingia Semialata Roxb. Valuable strain of Kusmi Lac. will be produced to enhance the income of the tribal beneficiaries and conservation of Flemingia species on deforested land. Organic farming with components of Mushroom cultivation, vermiform compost formation and horticulture raising will be introduced as regular and enhanced source of income. The degraded land under forestation will be developed by plantation of fast growing plant species, to restore the biodiversity of the area and bring considerable change in eco-system. Provide employment opportunity to local inhabitants.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project focuses on improving the livelihood and providing employment opportunities to the tribal/PTG tribal of Bonai sub division in Sundargarh district.

Notable Community Participation

The unemployed youth will be motivated to develop their interest to adopt Agro farming projects for their economic upliftment.

Project Results

o 20 Integrated farming demonstration sites have been set up at 20 villages to demonstrate the SHGs.
o More than 200 cook stoves have been constructed reducing CO2 emission up to 950MT
* Poultry managements-5 birds of Vanraj breed distributed among 500 SHG members.
o Partnerships built with ? NABARD, INRG Ranchi, ITDA, BHEL CSR.
* The marginal farming communities of the village and unemployed youth adopted integrated agro farming for their economic upliftment and provide healthier life i.e. chemical and pesticides free for everyone.
* Created sustainable livelihood opportunities to build an entrepreneurial management capacity of tribal women. Along this, the male members of the SHG are involved in the programme for adopting integrated agro farming concept.
* 50 women led SHGs have been trained on organic and integrated farming techniques.
