Fostering Climate Change Adaptation and Reducing the Impacts of Disaster Hazards through Mobilization of Local Resources
The proposed project site- Dudhauli VDC of Sindhuli District is prone to multiple risks such as flood, river cutting and landslide. In the past 30 years period, 218 ha land of 37 families have been completely eroded by the river turning them into pauper. In the last 10 years, more than 26 families have migrated from this place. The flood of 2041 and 2050 BS were in devastating in nature. The pressure on the forest is increasing in one hand and on other hand it is getting increasingly difficult for people to bring home forest products badly needed for their livelihood. Significant amount of time and labor are spent to collect and bring forest products home.
Dudhauli VDC lies in the South-east part of the District which is 80 Km far from the District Headquarters and 20 km north from the Mahendra Highway. Dominated by the Danuwar and Mushahar ethic groups, the total household of the VDC is 1758. The major livelihood options of the rural communities are agriculture based on-and-off-farm activities and wage labour
Considering the severity of the disaster hazards, this project only covers wards 7 and 8 for the demonstration purpose so that project?s major results could be replicated easily in the neighboring wards within and outside the VDC. The area is suitable as it has plenty of public land area along the Kamala river and indigenous peoples have skill of weaving Dhaka cloths. Some groups have already exported the product to Japan.
The project aimed to promote the agro-forestry initiatives for greenery promotion and river bank stabilization and improve their livelihood through community based natural local resource management.
