Sustainable Land Resource Management Initiatives in the Upstream and Downstream Communities of Simalpani VDC
Simalpani VDC is situated along the left bank of Banganga sub-watershed. From the land degradation and heavy soil erosion perspectives, wards 9, Rikot (upstream) and 5, Bikransota/Pawora, downstream are most fragile. Geographically, these two wards are very close hence can demonstrate how soil erosion in upstream can impact lives and livelihood of downstream communities. theThe total households of these two wards of Simalpani VDC are 612 and 3853 population. These wards are dominated by Magar community who are ultra poor and marginalized and their food sufficiency months are 3-6 months. For the rest of the year, they have to engage in off-farm activities to earn their livelihood. As a result, life is a constant struggle for survival and its ultimate pressure is in forest and land.
The upstream scenario is landslide due to slash and burn agriculture and unscientific slopping agriculture and forest denudation where asdown stream scenario is land degradation due to river cutting. Thus project aim to work in micro landscape to control both landslide and river training.
