Enhancing Climate Change Resiliency of Identified Climate Vulnerable Communities through Sustainable Management of Natural Water Bodies (Ponds)
Government of Nepal has already established institutional structure, prepared and endorsed National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA) 2010, Climate Change Policy (2011) and National Framework on Local Adaptation Program of Action (LAPA) (2011); and is in the process to prepare its National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and framework for Community based Adaptation Plan.
Based on the enabling policy environment, the project aim to implement LAPA in Laxmipur VDC, Dang having small vanishing water bodies. Natural water ponds are the storage of water that can be available to be used in scarcity. Not only as a measure to store water, with proper management of such ponds, can multiple products and services be secured. Biodiversity conservation, fishery and farming for income generation are a few examples. By utilizing appropriate water efficient technologies or irrigation system like drip irrigation, sprinkler, multiple use management system (MUS) and production of high-value agriculture crops can be enhanced. By empowerment and mobilization of the local stakeholders and the communities particularly the climate vulnerable poor and marginalized households, the benefits of managing ponds could be a crucial source for enhancement of local livelihoods. This in turn contributes to meet the poverty reduction target of the government as well as global commitments like MDGs. Further, this will support communities to adapt to the harsh climatic conditions.
