Promoting Sustainable Livelihood Project
Promoting Sustainable Livelihood Project
The target communities of Dhanusha Govindapur grow different types of seasonal and off seasonal vegetables round the year. The agriculture produce is marketed locally and at district headquarter. The main source of agriculture related information for these target groups is local agro-vets. Vegetable farming in the VDC is reliant on high use of chemical fertilizer and pesticide for increasing yield. The traditional practice and knowledge on composting and organic pest management is decreasing due to availability of market based chemical inputs. Cow/Buffalo dung are used as energy source for cooking while the soil is deprived of necessary organic nutrients. Unscientific use and handling of chemical pesticides fertilizers has posed a serious threat to soil and human health.

The Project aims to build capacities of the target groups, with 50% participation of women, on effective use and handling of chemical pesticides primarily on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) through participatory Farmers Field School (FFS) to improve productive yield. It also aims to reduce unscientific use of chemical pesticides which has posed a threat to soil degradation, health of farmers and consumers. The Project contributes towards GEF/SGP on OP5 Land degradation (LD) and Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) focal area.
