Reducing impacts of flood and drought on agriculture production and adaptation to flood through effective water management in 4 villages of Chong Ampil commune, Kanh Chreach district, Prey Veng province
Project goal:
Effectively improve production of flood and drought resistant rice crops in order to ensure sufficient food production in target communities.
Outcome 1: 6,341 farmers, 291 women, from 966 HHs in four villages, Prey Svay, Mean Chey, Kandach, and Mean Chey, of Chong Ampil commune, have reduced their vulnerability to climate change (drought) through effect use and management of water from a canal in their villages to ensure their sufficient access to water for irrigating 1,100 ha of wet and 1,100 ha of flood recession rice farming.
Output 1.1: A canal (2,900 m long, 6.5 m top width, 2 m bottom width, and 2.7 m depth) with 1 sluice gate and 1 culvert is rehabilitated and built by the end of January 2014.
Output 1.2: A water committee with 11 members, 5 women, established to manage and maintain the irrigation canal effectively.
Outcome 2: Farmers from 40 HHs in the four target villages of Chong Ampil commune have the necessary capacity to enhance rice yield from 1.5 to 3.5 tonnes per hectare.
Output 2.1: Farmers from 40 HHs changed from traditional rice farming to drought resistant farming technologies to enable an increase in rice yield to 3.5 tonnes per hectare.
Output 2.2: Four rice banks in four villages established to contribute to preservation and provision of drought and flood resilient rice variety and seeds.
Output 2.3: Poor farmers from 280 HHs in Poor I and II categories of the four target villages have access to clean water, credit, and water filters.
