Strengthening Rural Women Society for Fuel Efficient Energy Productions through Pyrolysis and Briquetting

The project aims at better management of energy producing bio-resources for improving the environment and local economy for strengthening community participation in the efforts of Climate Change. The project will enhance the capacity of traditional village institutions and women societies and their working together in group/team work to address the problems of energy sources in rural area. For the activation of the action plan, the project will facilitate a component of activities for Capacity building of communities, setup work shed and tools, collect biomass process productions, gender mainstreaming and replication of stakeholder institutions.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Documentation of learning on changes occurred in the life of the communities will be done and uploaded on the websites and printed in the magazines. Media workshop will be organized.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

In tribal society, women are responsible of firewood for the family. Local communities will be inherent with indigenous knowledge and technologies for managing their livelihoods.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Initially 5 Village Resource Planning Committee (VRPC) and 70 women self help energy groups (SHEGs) will be formed to understand and solve rural energy problems. Project orientation workshop will be conducted for 80 persons. Organized project replication workshop for stakeholder institutions for 40 persons. Facilitate expert meet on gender, environment and entrepreneurship 6 times for feedbacks on learning. Workshop for mediation and replication for 250 stakeholders will be conducted.

Capacity - Building Component

The VRPC and SHEGs in management, accounting, saving, credits, pyrolysis and briquetting for fuel efficient energy production and enterprises.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at strengthening rural women society for fuel efficient energy productions through Pyrolsis and Briquetting. Better use of energy will be done by producing bio- resources for improving the environment and local economy. The fuel efficient energy will be produced with the help of Pyrolsis and Briquetting(fuel from agriculture residues or biomass) to reduce community hardship, women drudgery, promote rural entrepreneurs and employment thereby promoting community initiatives for reducing further depletion of forest soil and water resources. The use of briquetted fuels will be promoted for increasing domestic energy, income and health of the community. 14 units of workshed units will be constructed with pyrolysis domes and 204,400 briquetted fuels.

Policy Impact

The use of Non timber forest produce (NTFPs) for rural livelihoods and industrialization in the emerging issues under mandate consideration of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Forest and Environment, commerce and industries etc of the India Rajiv Gandhi vitrak vikas for rural energy problem. Engagement of DDK under rural outreach program. Increase relationship between stakeholders by improving support service and ensuring greater responsiveness to local communities on environment conservation. The activities of the project will be helpful in replicating the same.

Gender Focus

Women societies will be involved in planning, production of domestic energy and management from locally available biomass to solve livelihood problem arising out of rural energy sources. 70 and more families use low carbon emission briquetted fuels and refrain from long distance collection of fire woods. Increase women livelihood opportunity, income and self reliance in briquetted fuel production and enterprise. Women self reliance will be enhanced at both household and community level. Women groups will start saving habits, good account keeping, micro savings and credits, knowledge learning to uptake local movement for protecting the depletion of natural resources. Men will be involved in women?s group work in mason work, assist in collection of biomass, monitoring, evaluation etc.

Notable Community Participation

Youth clubs in sports will be motivated to be active in environmental issues.

Project Results

* Established 5 replication units namely - Sohophe SHG, Kaibi village, Tadubi Block, Senapati district, Okai SHG, Rabumanai village, Mao Block, Senapati district, Kitoutsii SHG, Chingmei khunou, Paomata Block, Senapati district, Shri. Mathew Kambo, Individual Entrepreneur, Maram Block, Senapati district and Mrs. Nemchin Doungel, Individual entrepreneur, National Game village, Imphal.
* The NGO is the member of ACCORD. (ACCORD is an umbrella of SHGs in Senapati district supported by NERCORMs-DoNER- NEC, Ministry of Home Affairs, GoI).
* Officials from Tata Trust have visited the project sites and are keen to adopt the project model and technology to include in their Livelihood Skill Project component for their North East zonal programme.
* 150 smokeless cook stoves reducing 712 MT of CO2 emission. According to Zicord Test report, burning 1 kg of firewood produces 2.05 kgs of CO2, while consuming 1 briket (650-700 gms) reduces firewood use by 5 kgs. Annual production of briket by the EPGs is 144700 x 5 kgswood x 2.o5 kgs Co2 = 144.7 Tons. CO2 reduction by 11 Kgs saves 1 tree (Low Carbon Lifestyle, CEE-UNDP Tool Kit).
* The project linked sustainable livelihoods to climate change and land degradation by enabling 11 women SHGs to produce biomass briquettes for selling in local market thereby increasing their individual and household income.
