Building capacity to adapt to drought in order to improve livelihood of indigenous community
Project goal: To ensure that by the end of 2014 people from 799 HHs, 90.24% - ethnic minority, from 3 villages, Knach, Treab, and Chranaol villages, Thmei commune, Chet Borei district, Kratie province, have the necessary capacity to adapt to climate change with increased knowledge on rice and vegetable farming technologies, functional saving groups and two rice farming cycles annually.
Outcome 1: At least 300 members, 150 women, of Khmer and the ethnic Cham communities, village authority, commune councilors, the beneficiaries of the project in the 3 villages, Knach, Treab, and Chranaol villages, Thmei commune, have an increased knowledge on adaptation to climate change and adopted climate resilient farming practices, with 12 model farmers engaged in demonstration activities on rice and vegetables farming guided by provincial Department of Agriculture.
Output 1.1: At least 300 people, 150 women, including village authority, commune councilors, and community members in the 3 target villages, Knach, Treab, and Chranaol, Thmei commune enhanced their knowledge on climate change.
Output 1.2: 48 model farmers, 24 women, from 12 HHs in the 3 target villages, Knach, Treab, and Chranaol, Thmei commune engaged in demonstration of high yield and climate resilient rice and vegetable farming guided by Kratie provincial Department of Agriculture.
Output 1.3: At least 40 members, 25 women, from 40 HHs in the communities participated in saving groups and had available capital to invest in improved rice and vegetable farming practices and in petty businesses; with the existing 3 saving groups at Trapeang Tapong, Cham Noch Chres and Chamnoch Skaor, had their capacity strengthened to run and manage their respective saving groups.
Outcome 2: 1,042 framers, 550 women, from 189 HHs, who are ethnic minority groups at Chark had access to sufficient water for human and animal consumption and also for irrigating wet season rice and vegetable gardens from a rehabilitated irrigation scheme of a dike, 250 m long, a sluice gate, and a spillway, a pond (30 m x 50m x 2 m) and 2 open wells.
Output 2.1: A dike 250 m long with a sluice gate, and a spillway rehabilitated, a pond 30m x 50m x 2 m normalized, and 2 open wells repaired with capacity to irrigate 50 ha rice field.
Output 2.2: A dike management committee of 5 people, 1 to 2 are women; a pond management committee of 5 members, 1 to 2 are women; and 2 well management committees of 5 members each, 1 to 2 are women selected and received training to manage and maintain these water supply facility.
