Biodiversity Conservation Through Community Based Afforestation, Rehabilitation and Livelihood Improvement
The project aims to contribute to biodiversity conservation efforts of Simien Mountain National Park through community based afforestation, rehabilitation and livelihood improvement which will reduce the local community negative impact on the natural resources of the national park. The project anticipates to carry out activities such as equipping the local community (350HHs) with the necessary knowledge, skill & tools and enhance their participation and involvement to the biodiversity conservation effort, rehabilitating highly degraded areas (25Ha) through area closure and sustainably co-managing of the area by the local community to obtain a mutual benefit from the environment, increasing forest coverage through indigenous tree seedlings plantation (35,000 tree seedlings) to have a sustainable forest development in the park, and diversifying livelihood options of the local community (230 people) through alternative income generating activities which will then reduce over utilization of the natural resources of the park.
