The project was terminated, but it has developed community groups from 6 villages in promotion of selling home industry product (handicraft, palm sugar). Project activities - with some modifications - are currently continuing with the assistance of BCN and VOCA sponsors. Lesson-learned are: increased of environmental awareness has created a new trend whereby local villagers spend more time in their cultivated land and in their home-industry business and less time foraging in the National Park to earn their living. This GEF SGP funding has enabled BScC and the community in which they work (in Halimun) to confidently and systematically develop plans and initiate the implementation of those plans. However, without further commitment (such as they now receive from BCN, and expert assistance from VOCA), it would appear that the project may experience a setback in implementing the plans.
There is at least one aspect that BScC needs to be wary of in developing an eco-tourism business. With the advancement of Intellectual Property Rights and Patenting, BScC should anticipate potential problems by providing adequate training and strengthening responsibilities. For instance, being careful toward invitations to submit samples of economic plants to the private sectors or other parties to avoid misuse of patent and intellectual property rights.
