SUPPORT FOR THE LONGIDO GREEN ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT
Context:
Longido is characterized by major environmental challenges. They include overgrazing, soil erosion and drought, loss of biodiversity, degraded water catchments and absence of firewood. A related challenge is the use of cow-dung as an alternative source of energy for cooking and heating, which otherwise would have been used as manure for plant growth. GAS intends to use its experience through participatory approaches to support Maasai Pastoral Committees who mainly live in this district to address those challenges.
About the NGO
The NGO was established and registered in 1996. In 2002, it received a certificate of compliance under the NGO Act of 2002. Its focus is on environment education to primary and secondary schools. This focus is premised in the Bible, Proverb 22:6 which state that ?Training of a child is a treasure to his life?. The NGO has supported over 20 primary and secondary schools to plant trees in and around their schools in Arusha region. Through an outreach programme, the NGO has supported training of village environment committees and tree planting activities to local communities. Furthermore, GAS argues that when school children are equipped with environment education, they will be responsible protectors of the environment during their adulth
