?Community-Based Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation Initiative Aimed at Conserving Wild Birds, and Animals in Bamyan?.

The Panjab District of Bamyan is home to endangered species of wild birds and animals such as Kabk Zarin (Grey Partridge), Quail, Falcon and local varieties of fish and deer. The five endangered species are found in upper parts of Tagabbarg valley and Baba Mountains north east of Panjab. According to Bamyan Provincial Environment Protection Department, the Kabk Zarin is a unique species that has seen significant declines in population in the area in recent times.

In spite of existing laws and regulation on wildlife protection, there is a trend of indiscriminate hunting in the region, which further endangers the species. Hunters resort to primitive and irrational methods such as electrocution of streams, that instantly destroy all biodiversity in the zone. Of particular concern is the fact that there is a link for selling falcons seized in Panjab, as a pet or for use as a bird of prey, in other parts of the country and even abroad. This could make the challenge for conservation worse.

This project is aimed at conserving these illegally targeted species through establishing community-based monitoring and protection system that are expected to effectively conserve biodiversity in the area and add to the natural beauty and attractiveness of the region.
Habitat loss and fragmentation are also a threat to this species that yet to receive government serious attention and to provide the resources and capacity required establishing appropriate enforcement and protection levels. This project contains a strategy that will involve local government institutions, civil society, elders and local influential in the establishment and implementation of conservation monitoring and

protection system that will be developed in close coordination with relevant government departments to remove the direct threat to targeted creatures.

This project will not only benefit aforementioned species of animals and birds, but other species inhabiting in these two vallies of Panjab District, primarily through improved enforcement activities as well as community engagement .
