Gambiri desert is located in Kuz Kunar district of Nangarhar province. The main concern for communities living around the desert area land degradation, shelter and livelihood insecurities that are created by sandy winds from the desert, which badly affect homesteads, agricultural lands, livestocks, gardens and roads.

The proposed project seeks to address the situation through plantation of Tamarix in the Gambiri desert. This intervention is expected to bring in several advantages to the local environment and economy. For one, wild animal habitat shall be encouraged and vegetation shall improve biodiversity. Second, agriculture and livestock, key livelihood aspects of the local community, will be significantly improved. Reforestation will not only address the issue of sandy winds, it will prevent further land degradation, improve livelihood opportunities of the local economy. Finally, afforestation shall contribute to climate mitigation, and set an example for replication in other parts of Afghanistan.
