Participatory Urban Waste Collection and Composting Project in Jalalabad
Participatory Urban Waste Collection and Composting Project?,

In order to minimize municipal solid waste production in Jalalabad, it is essential to develop environmental awareness and practices for citizens and shop keepers, and enable them to play a role in handling and collection of urban solid waste. If residents in the municipality, as prime stakeholders, can facilitate processes of collection of solid waste, then the municipality shall be able to execute municipal waste management in an efficient manner.

This project will set up structures for collection of solid waste, together with sensitization of urban communities on the significance of solid waste collection, and on the role that could be played by resident groups. In addition, organic waste collected shall be composted and composted waste will be provided to the farmers as organic fertiliser. In the case of inorganic wastes, these will be processed by municipality via incineration or other methods.

The project aims to involve the media and municipal bodies together, with the objective of delivering the message of waste managemet for all stakeholders such as residents, shop keepers and farmers. The project will also contribute to recycling of community waste and replacement of chemical fertilizer with compost, in Nangarhar province.
