Organic Certification for Organic Farmers in Barbados

Barbados has already adopted the CODEX standard for organic farming but has not developed the system for delivery of inspections and certification of these standards. The goal of this project is to implement a national organic inspection and certification system with the OGCA and any number of farmers certified, through this system, as organic. Its objectives include training persons as farm inspectors, building capacity in inspection record keeping, project management, developing an organic farm training module for growers and consumers and promoting the authentic brand of organic.

Policy Impact

The certification system complements the CODEX guidelines for organic farming.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project allows for the long-term sustainability of the sustainable livelihoods already in existence. In addition, it will provide new sustainable livelihood opportunities by facilitating the genesis of a new industry.

Notable Community Participation

The project demonstrates community involvement in the planning, implementation and evaluation stages. Communities will be involved in environmental and awareness surveys, meetings, workshops and one-on-one discussions during the planning phase. The community will be involved in the implementation phase as volunteers, employees and co-funders. Women in Agriculture and other farming groups will participate in a final workshop to further expand the project.

Gender Focus

The project has been designed to promote gender equality as both men and women will be involved in all aspects of the project.

Project Results

Ten persons, both national and non-national, were internationally certified as organic inspectors and this has created a potentially new area for income generation.

Twenty persons trained in project management, project proposal development to enable them to access funding, 31 persons were trained in Communication and 22 persons trained in Organic Farm Management. Members were also sensitized on ICT, using tablets for record keeping.

OGCA also built synergies with other GEF SGP funded projects and thus increasing knowledge capacity in permaculture design and tissue culture practices. Notably four members of OGCA gained their certificate in Permaculture design under CPRI. Three females are currently being trained in this areas. One organics farmer has been exposed to tissue culture practices and three organic farmers are currently growing natural fibres to support the BIEP's project.
