Reducing the use and abuse of plastic bags through replacing them with reusable cloth bags made of recycled denim jeans
Plastic bags are among the items that are non-biodegradable. This means that they are not biodegraded or, in simpler terms, do not decay. It takes thousands of years before one plastic bag can turn into small particles.
There are various ways on how plastic bags can harm the health of humans and the entire environment. Two major methods that release toxic chemicals of plastic bags are by burning and throwing. Whether you burn or throw plastic bags, all the chemicals are released which can cause harm to the society. Notoriously dangerous toxins such as dioxins (POPs) are released during the uncontrolled burning of the plastics.
Plastic bags in Albania are overly used and very little recycled due to a variety of reasons. Among the main reasons is the fact that they are provided apparently free of charge although their cost is hidden in the price of purchased goods. Another reason is the use of very thin plastic bags that have short life span and are difficult to recycle.
This project will experiment the production of 5,000 bags through recycling of used denim. The bags will be promoted at production cost. The project will also lobby at governmental level for forcing retailers to disclose the price of the bags and include it in the shopping list
