Protection of farm animal biodiversity through emergency intervention on the rapidly disappearing bread of goat “Capore e Mokres”
Albania?s hinterland is characterized by a high degree of diversity of the terrain consisting of valleys flanked by high mountain ranges. It is a well known fact that topography plays an important role in generating spatial variation of biodiversity. This fact combined with the sedentary lifestyles of the local population in the past has contributed strongly in the high biodiversity in the environment as well as in the local farms.
The goat breed of ?Caporja e Mokres? has evolved in the mountain region of the Mokra region in the South Eastern part of Albania. The breed is characterized by high resistance to diseases as well as good parameters of milk. The region was characterized by a high degree of migration to Greece during the last 20 years. Recent economic downfall in Greece as well as positive changes in the local economy in Albania has brought back many former immigrants. Building of new road in the Mokra region is expected to facilitate the movement of local products to the main markets.
This project will consists in establishment of breeding program that will try to help the recovery of this goat species by preserving the existing gene pool and preventing inbreeding. It typically consists in identifying the ?pure individuals? and establishing a minimum of breeding lines. Local farmers are subsidized in creating ?pure flocks? by replacing animals of other breeds with the pure ones. Participating farmers will receive help consisting in animal food and veterinary services.
