Capacity - Building Component

In this project 58 families will be benefited with activities such as construction of dams and water containment systems, enclosing of a crucial water source which will regenerate vegetation, restoring area around the Lamba stream, conduction of a course on water management, a course on preservation and restoration of native forest, and technical support and monitoring.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The main goal is to improve social and environmental quality of the communities, through means of interventions towards sustainable management of water, soil, and native vegetation. The community has suffered for decades from the impact of eucalyptus monocultures in the region, which have affected water availability in the communities and confined cattle in steep areas. With time, the lack of adequate techniques for cattle management resulted in land degradation and difficulties in restoring and regenerating pastures.

Notable Community Participation

The project ?Sustainable Management of Water and Vegetation: Changing the landscape?, proposed by the Association of Community Development in Pontezinha, will be implemented in the communities of Pontezinha and Ribeirão das Posses, both located in the municipality of Veredinha.

Project Results

- 15 farmers in the community of Pontezinha were trained in restoration of riparian forest;
-All the surroundings of the Lamba Stream was fenced by collective work, excluding livestock and allowing the natural regeneration of 43 ha;
- 14 technologies constructed, 3 little dams; 3 terraces and 8 containment basins built;
- 9,200 million liters of water being stored through social technologies;
- 31 families benefited directly by water storage technologies, in addition to many indirectly due to the recovery of streams.
