Protection of migratory birds of prey along the Batumi migration route

Aim of the Project is to support protection of migratory birds of prey along the Batumi migration route, through involvement of local population, their awareness rising and elaboration of mechanisms for their economic stimulation
Objective 1: Assessment of impact of human activities, in particular hunting and trapping (falconry practice) of on birds of prey during their migration
Objective 2: Implementation of awareness rising activities among local population on the bird migration and associated issues
Objective 3: Promotion of Batumi bottleneck and usage of its factor for capacity building of local population to achieve sustainability, by development of eco-tourism.
Objective 4: Sharing of foreign experience in the fields of sustainable falconry, promotion of sustainable falconry and elaboration of proposal for introduction of appropriate regulations in Georgian legislation

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Among the 4 main components of the project, 2 ? the local population awareness rising and capacity building components will consider involvement of women and their role. The activities under thee components, namely development of hospitality services and support of communication with tourists, as well as information campaign on bird migration and associated problems, will consider equal participations of male and female members of community. Traditionally women have leading role in the housekeeping and rising of children. Therefore wide involvement of women would be very important prerequisite for the success and sustainability of above activities, and generally ensuring the gender equality and economic prosperity. One of the objectives of project is to support tourism development, as in the target communities eco-tourism is considered as an important and prospective source of income. We believe that ecotourism can be used as an effective mean for increasing of economic and social role of women, moreover, it will support involvement of women in the environmental conservation activities .

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Implementation of awareness rising activities among local population on the bird migration and associated issues Project team and network members will organize informational workshops on bird migration and associated problems. Besides training seminars the network members will also receive materials and relevant knowledge to share with other falconers during the falconry practice. Notable Community Participation

Several components of the project are focused on involvement of local communities from the project area, namely vil. Sakhalvasho and Makhinjauri. Activities under this component consider identification of motivated individuals among local population who will form the bird caretaker network. Preference will be given to the falconers who do not kill birds. Members of network will undergo training and receive information materials. The project team and network members will organize informational workshops on bird migration and associated problems. Besides training seminars, the network members will also receive materials and relevant knowledge to share with other falconers during the falconry practice.

Capacity - Building Component

The main strategic direction of the project is biodiversity conservation, however project also considers development of local communities which is addressed by the project. In the beginning the project team will study-evaluate the living conditions of the local households and prepare recommendations for development of household based hospitality services The database of households with available hospitality services will be prepared and their contact information will be placed on the touristic websites (including Ajara Tourism Deparment website).

Project Results

1. impact of anthropogenic damage on migratory birds was assessed
2. project promoted falconers activities , festival was organized twice with total 40 participants
3. project formed migratory birds protectors network who have been trained adequately
4. The defenders of the migratory birds carried awareness raising campaign in local population; The campaign covered over one hundred local residents and hunters.
5. 4 information billboard was prepared and installed where there active bird hunting (Chaisubani, Sakhalvasho, Gonio and river delta) takes place
6. The project selected 8 local residents, who had been given recommendations about guesthouse keeping and hotel running issues, information about these selected guesthouse keepers where placed on special tourist sites.
7. prepared and printed for the local population auxiliary textbook to communicate with toursist, total of 30 pieces. The manual was distributed among deneficiaries
8. Contacts were established with the Turkish colleagues from Ardasheni?s falconers club. For experience sharing and to learn their rules and regulations about falcon management
9. In order to regulate the activities of sustainable falcon management, policy recommendations were prepared and delivered to the ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia. In addition round table was organizes to review proposed recommendations with participation of target beneficiaries.
