Promotion of Introduction of Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies in High-Mountain Regions
Promotion of Introduction of Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies in High-Mountain Regions
The project is aimed at fostering climate change mitigation process through the demonstration of applying a solar energy technologies, training of interested parties and energy efficiency promotion in high-mountain regions of Georgia (Svaneti, Racha, Zemo Imereti).
Project objectives are as follows:
1) Demonstration of applying a solar energy by installing water heating system on the pilot objects. During the course of the project, the solar water heating system will be installed on 2 selected areas (Ipari village in Mestia municipality and kindergarten N3 in Tkibuli).
2) Increasing public awareness of energy efficiency in selected regions. The target groups (farmers, representatives of local authorities and non-governmental organizations, teachers, journalists) will raise their awareness of climate changes, alternative and renewable energy sources, energy efficiency. There will be made publications, conducted training and prepared cycles of radio broadcasting.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
At all stages of project life cycle, community participation has a significant role to play The project target groups are as follows: ? representatives of farming enterprises and family hotels in Svaneti, Racha and Zemo Imereti, who are interested in use of renewable energy sources (particularly in solar energy); ? representatives of local authorities, who will acquire knowledge and information for promotion of sustainable development in communities; ? teachers of schools and kindergartens will enhance their knowledge in renewable energy sources and their using. ? journalists, who being based on acquired knowledge provide dissemination of information on renewable energy sources. On the basis of preliminary consultations and agreement with representatives of local authorities and non-governmental organizations at project developemnt stage, there have been selected the following pilot objects: K. Khvisatani?s farming eneterprise in the village of Ipari of Mestia municipality and Tkibuli kindergarten N3. There have been determined the anticipated data. A considerable share of communities participation in project will be as follows: ? suitable area for installation of solar systems, ? direct participation in the construction and installation works, ? providing necessary conditions for system functioning, ? operation of installed solar systems in compliance with appropriate requirements, ? providing the monitoring of the proper operation of system.
Gender Focus
The project envisages advansing of gender equality and equity as during the project life cycle, so in sharing benefits from project results. During the project development stage, women were involved on an equal basis with men. Based on private conversations, we have taken account for women interests in the project that is mainly aimed at improving working and household conditions for women that in turn is a significant factor for high-mountain regions, where women are mostly engaged in household activities. The project results (applying a solar energy) will contribute to improving conditions of life for rural population (including women and children), facilitation of women?s labor. Possibilities of consumption of free energy will foster improving living standards and incomes. The project results beneficiaries will be at least 150 women and girls, and 100 men. Women will be involved actively in project activities (trainings, meetings, publications), in particular, at least 60% of beneficiaries will be women. Free hot water obtained as a results of installing the water heating system at farming enterprises and kindergartens and its use will contribute not only to strengthening social equity of women and men, but improving health of women and children (including girls). Women on an equal basis with man will acquire knowledge and practical skills for for using a solar energy, and available simple methods and means for energy efficiency and conservation.
