Implementation of energy efficient cook stove in Sirsi Forest Region, Western Ghats, Karnataka
Project goal- Enable the forest dependent communities to adopt sustainable utilization of forest resources and reduce pressure on forests which in turn would lead to conservation of forests resources.
Project Objectives:
To promote sustainable use of forest resources through energy efficient cooking stoves among forest dependent communities (500 Households) in Sirsi Forest Region in Karnataka
Specific Objective-
? Create awareness about fuel efficient devices and benefits from adoption of such devices among local communities in 5 villages
? Install fuel efficient devices in about 500 households in 10 villages and train people for using and maintaining these devices
? Conduct training cum workshop for local youth in designing and installation of fuel efficient mud stove as a potential employment generation option
? Assess the status of the forests in the village vicinity by looking at the species composition, stem density and biomass available in the forests before and after the project activities
? Formulate a plan for sustainable extraction of firewood and management of forest resources in the village leading to conservation of resources
Project activities-
? Awareness among the local communities about the importance of fuel efficient devices and its role in sustainability of forest resources increased
? The fuel efficient cooking stove installed and used by about 500 families in 10 villages in the project area
? About 25 local youth trained in designing and installation of fuel efficient cook stove
? Citizen Scientists comprising of urban youth, teachers and corporate employees developed
? Extraction of trees species for fuel wood from the forests reduced
? A participatory plan for sustainable use of fuel wood developed and implemented by the local communities.

Notable Community Participation
25 Local youth will be involved in designing and installation of cook stoves. The youth will support the activities with knowledge and skills required for exploring income generation opportunities for installation of fuel efficient cook stoves in the region.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
All material, report and documents related to project will be made available on the NGO?s website for open public access. Project activities will encourage Citizen Scientist to write their experience on blogs.
